The Policlinico of Milan is Italy’s top-ranked public Hospital for the quantity and quality of research: a position attributed by the Ministry of Health for the relevance of scientific publications, the ability to attract funding, the large number of patients involved in clinical trials, and the quantity of granted patents.
Recognized in 1981 as an Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Health Care (IRCCS - italian acronym of Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico), the Policlinico does biomedical and health research by integrating it with the patient care pathway: clinical and translational activities focus on prevention, new diagnostic techniques and increasingly effective therapies, bringing the discoveries obtained in the laboratories to have a concrete impact on patients' health.
The hospital's multi-specialty nature is its distinguishing note, because it enables it to address different areas of care simultaneously and thus give patients the best care, at all ages of life: not only for the best-known diseases but also for more than 330 rare diseases.
It has at its disposal the most advanced techniques for precision medicine, such as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), transcriptomics, epigenomics and in vitro functional models.
New cell and gene therapies are also possible thanks to a 500-square-meter high-security biobank, included in the Biobanking and BioMolecular resources Research Infrastructure - European Research Infrastructure Consortium (BBMRI-ERIC).
