Newborn screening

During the hospitalization of your newborns, we will conduct screenings aimed to early detection of some very rare but crucial conditions.

The first one I would like to discuss is the so-called metabolic diseases screening, performed around two days of age through a blood sample to identify potential metabolism defects in sugars, fats, proteins, and other conditions such as Hypothyroidism and Cystic Fibrosis.

The second screening involves otoacoustic emissions, helping us rule out hearing impairments and congenital deafness.

The third comprises the examination for the so-called red reflex, allowing us to exclude certain ocular conditions such as congenital cataracts.
